This fabulous antique Indian coffee table is an Indian daybed known as a takhat. Takhats were originally used as daybeds by the wealthy merchant classes in Rajasthan, particularly in the Shekhawati area.
The original iron lifting handles mark this as an early 19th century piece - circa 1820) - the top has wide planks that have developed a wonderful patina and are bound with hand beaten iron. An inscription in Hindi is visible in one corner. The skilfully turned legs offer an incredibly sturdy base.
It would make an impressive centerpiece for a living room, conservatory, or summer house.
